[Wusa-microsoft] Kick off conversation

My question for the week: Has Microsoft's patching process become
reliable enough to have servers automatically downloading and installing
patches on a schedule? In a former job where I had more time and got
paid extra for overtime, I was encouraged to babysit the patch
installation and server reboot process one Friday night a month. I
haven't felt like I have that kind of time for about the last year or
more, so I don't know that I have a choice.

My background: About 20 years as a PC user (started with DOS on an IBM
PS/2 Model 30), and six years working in IT with most of that time spent
supporting Windows platforms. I got my start in the now-defunct
computer rental company Houlihan Computer Solutions. I worked for St.
Louis Community College at Florissant Valley for almost five years
before coming here in December. At StLCC I was a key member of the
district-wide Active Directory domain implementation, migration and
consolidation team. We moved over 6,000 users, 1,500 desktops, and
dozens of servers in a half-dozen NT4 and 2000 AD domains into one 2003
AD domain with seven sites.

Currently I help Brad Pots with the ResTech domain and a couple others,
especially as it affects our 100+ lab computers and other clients. I
also support a couple of Mac Xserves and around 30 Mac clients. That's
just part of my job supervising the day-to-day activities of ResTech,
but I need not enumerate those other duties here I think.

Chris
